For small batches of plaster it works good, however the lid will restrain the mixer paddles to the center and you will have dry powdery edges around the bucket. The manufacturer recommends using the lid for obvious safety reasons and it is not recommended to use without the lid.
However, at my own risk(not recommended) we use this without the lid and with the spring loaded adjustable arm, and the dual opposite rotating paddles, we find it very useful and easier on the back. It is very strong - we've only been using it for about 5 hours of mixing total, the first one we had burnt up due to some bearings leaking, the return with Home Depot was painless and we exchanged for a new one which has been running great.
This is a good cost effective option for DIY's who work on a small scale. I would have given it a 5 start except for the first one that broke down and the lid confinement and that it doesn't run slower. It does have adjustable speeds though....just wish it ran a little slower on the low end.

Total BeastEase and efficiency is what I look for in tools, and this dual paddle mixer is the definition of that. I’ve been putting off doing my stairs what it seems in forever. So to make my life a bit easier, I got this tool. Not only does it look heavy duty, it is an absolute animal. Having presets already programmed it was easy to find mortar setting, there are 8 presets programmed and I believe there are 8 more that you can program. I was actually excited to start this project, got all my materials together and I was off. This was the first time that I have mixed mortar or cement that wasn’t a project, it was quite easy having an arm fitted with preloaded spring, so lifting the mixer was quite light. By having this tool it allowed me to have time to line up my materials and tools while mortar was mixing. I felt like a had another guy with me. Best part of this is that the stand has wheels so it’s easy to move around and it folds really nice for space saving. I’m already planing more project.
I absolutely love this tool and would definitely recommend it

Mixing anything with this will be a breeze compared to using a hand held mixer. I've always used a single paddle hand held mixer but will never go back after using this. It's very heavy duty but doesn't require a lot of space. It folds up for portability but it is quite heavy. The mixer has different programs you can set for different materials. It's designed so that you can still move the mixer around in your bucket but the stand makes it feel like it's floating. Two thumbs up for this.

The programmable mixing feature is terrific.There are so many different settings for so many material types you are mixing!. Setting it to do all the work for you is Great!! I will not hand mix with a single paddle again! It gets the material to the consistancy you want.Being able to lift the paddles out of the bucket and swing them clear with ease in a fantastic feature. The slow start motor reduces that splash effect. The time you save and the reduction of hand labor makes this a very affordable choice...

Easy way to mixI had a few projects around the house that needed mortar mixing and this was the easy way to get it done. I mixed over 6 60lb bags of mortar the easy way.
This made the tedious job of mixing mortar much much easier. I could focus on laying the mortar on my block wall instead of wasting time mixing.
It's easy to setup, easy to use and saves time. What a sweet tool!
I recommend this product.

The stand is pretty handy, but it doesn’t mix...The stand is pretty handy, but it doesn’t mix as well as by hands, and it is not heavy duty enough, needing cool down too often, but still a handy tool but not for pro.
