Great product but a little pricey at $50 each
I used these on pine basement steps which had been painted and carpeted several times. The finished product looks great.
It took some labor to clean up the carpet tacks on the stringers. Instead of cleaning up the stair facing I used luan paneling. It was simpler and provided a clean finish. Then each tread cap had to be cut down width and depth. The nose overlapped nicely with the old step. Make sure the overlap is as tight as possible so the tread cap uses the old step for reinforcement. If your cuts aren't perfect you could use a small corner molding top/bottom, or possibly caulk. I finished by painting the stair facing and stringers white which was a beautiful contrast to the tread caps.
The caps are not vinyl like the similar flooring, but rather a composite material. If the tread caps are damaged later they can't be refinished so you would have to replace the damaged pieces, or maybe paint or carpet over the steps.
