Impressive, but color matching is a major issue
This product is impressive and any photos really do not do it justice.
Issues:
1. I was told by a professional that it is laminate, not vinyl. I don't really care, but I do wish it was thinner as there will be a little more height difference on that first step than I expected.
2. The cherry is darker and has more darker grain than I could see in the photo online.
3. Stores do not carry samples so color matching is a MAJOR issue. I was told to order one and return it and order another if the colors were not close enough.
I have included a photo to show what I mean - but even the photos do not depict the color differences. The first few are photos I took of both products. After the green line you will see the photos of both products from online. I was afraid my floor would be darker than the stair treads based on that photo, but looking at the stair tread online and my actual floor they seemed very close. It turns out that the tread is far darker. (see photo) In fact, the color tones are closer than the photos appear but the cap a tread is so much darker that it is an issue.
At $54 with tax and a possible 15% restocking fee (depending on who I talk to at Home Depot), I am not thrilled about ordering treads over and over until I find the right one. It is a shame because I am very impressed with the appearance and it may be the only viable option for my particular situation.
Since I have not installed it, I really cannot accurately assess the product. Below are my general opinions at this point:
- Clearly installation is going to be easier than for products requiring cutting the stair nose. I suspect I will be able to do this myself.
- I love not having to stain it myself.
- I think these will look good once done, particularly since you are not piecing each step. I have yet to see a photo of a staircase with laminate boards that I liked, mainly because it takes multiple boards to cover one tread and then it tends to look like laminate.
- Although they do have some texture, they will be slippery, but I would want a runner anyway.
