The Stay Put 4 ft. x 12 ft. Surface Grip and Spill Block is an improvement over regular drop cloths.
The grippy backing definitely helps keep it in place, unlike plastic drop cloths or plain canvas tarps. The plastic drop cloths would prevent paint leaking through, but they tend to slip, especially on stairs.
But it’s not perfect. The 4’ width is wider than most stairs, so you have to fold it over (see pictures), which works “OK”, but not great - either it doesn’t have as much of the grip surface on the stairs, or it’s bunched up on top. And even when it has good contact with the floor, it still slips a little. Really, there’s no perfect answer for stairs.
I’ve managed to paint a lot of rooms and stairs without this, and it’s not cheap by drop cloth standards. If it fits your space and meets your needs it’s probably worth it.

I have some other canvases that I use for painting, but I use this to protect the floor when we have renters come through to look at the properties. During rainy season, this helps keep the property clean and since the flooring is new(laminates or tiles) it stays in place vs the other canvas that I usually use which moves all over the place. It's a little heavier than others but that's ok to me.

Except for an adhesive sheet, which was fairly expensive, that I bought years ago to protect new rugs from paint spatters, I have lived with shifting, puddles of paint forming on plastic, stepping in them to track paint footprints around the house, and paint penetrating old sheets leaving stains behind when I moved them.
This product is too absorbent to puddle, plastic lined so it won't leak, 4x12 so it's easy to manage, but expensive enough to reuse.

This will not be my first purchase of this. Great quality, just the right size for all size jobs. adding spill block to a drop cloth would seem like a no brainer. surprised that more had not done it. all in all a great item regardless if you are a pro or diy

I did a lot of things around the house this weekend and I couldn’t believe how durable the spill block was. From spilled paint to tipping over water bottle and nothing got onto my carpet. It’s worth the money to purchase something durable and easy to clean. I’m done buying plastic and tarps.

Used during an art tour to protect living room carpeting....Used during an art tour to protect living room carpeting. Worked very well. Previously used the adhesive backed clear material that was a lot of work to put down and worse to remove. Plus, we can reuse this next year. Very satisfied with the product.
